With the so-called Berliner , only the dealer is allowed to play a game using the stock. The other players may only declare a Hand contract.
At the same time it is sometimes agreed that the dealer may only play with hearts as the trump suit in a contract where the stock is viewed.
A 'sharp' variant has been published as an app by Stefan Vogl. This largely follows the intermediate rules above, but uses a shortened pack of just 24 cards from Sow down to Nine and players are dealt a hand of seven cards each.
Players start with 10 euros each and 61 points are needed to win; if the declarer scores 60, he loses. A Frage , Solo or Herzsolo win earn 20 cents for the winning side.
In addition there is an extra 10 cents for winning schneider and 10 cents for schwarz winning all tricks. Hearts are permanent trumps in a Frage and, if the stock is used, a win only earns 10 cents, but a loss still costs 20 cents.

You must beat the highest card on the table if possible. You are not allowed to play the Pagat until you must play it: if it's your last card, if it's your last Tarock, or if it's the only card that will win the trick i.
Emperor Trick. In this case the bids from Three to Berach inclusive are unavailable. The bidding must begin with Solo No Peek or higher, and if as will often happen all four players pass, Klop is played.
Compulsory Klop makes certain Contracts available because the cards have been or are about to be redealt. Compulsory Klop is played after any Player's cumulative score reaches exactly zero a new twist and after a Player is dealt no Tarocks.
Three, Two, One The Declarer chooses a partner by calling a King, and gets to exchange the appropriate number of cards with the Talon Three exchanges 3 cards The object of the game is to win at least 35 card points plus one extra card.
The Declarer can also raise the contract to Colour Valat , no bonuses, no difference after exchanging with the Talon.
Barach The Declarer plays alone and doesn't get to exchange any cards with the Talon. The object of the game is to take no Tricks.
The additional rules for Barach apply. The Talon remains face down in the middle of the table and the Declarer starts the game by placing his card to his side of the Talon.
Other Players do the same. The Player who wins the trick leads the next trick by placing his card on top of his first card, but doesn't cover it completely, then others do the same.
In time, a kind of a cross is formed on the table to enable all the players to see all the cards that have been played so far.
The score for the game is Solo No Peek The Declarer plays alone and doesn't get to exchange any cards.
The Talon unrevealed goes to the opposition. The object of the game is to win at least 35 points plus one extra card.
After the first Trick is played, the Declarer arranges all her cards face up on the table so that the other Players can see them.
This makes the Bid extremely hard to win. The Declarer's opponents are not allowed to discuss the play. The Declarer leads.
A player unable to follow suit is still obliged to play a Tarock, but the Tarocks are not trumps - the Trick is won by the highest card of the suit led.
When a Tarock is led, players must follow with Tarocks if possible and the highest Tarock wins. No one is allowed to look at the cards in the Talon and it is set to the side.
The Skeench-a-tola :. When the Players wish to end the game maybe at a certain time, like AM, or when a Player reaches a certain score - usually - or when the Players are simply too sleepy or too fed up to continue with the session , the Dealer calls Skeench-a-tola.
The cards are dealt and a Round is played as usual, but the Players note who ends up with the Skeench. Whoever ends up with the Skeench in the Skeench-a-tola Round will be the last dealer of the game.
For example, if in the Skeench-a-tola Round, the dealer ends up with the Skeench, another four Rounds will be played.
The five-player game is virtually identical to the four-player game. The Dealer deals the cards to all Players but himself and thus finishes his role in the game.
In the next game, the next Player deals. The Dealer never scores anything. The three-player game requires much more concentration than the four player version.
The cards and their values are the same as in the four player game, and the rules of play are the same, except where specified below. The Player to the left of the dealer cuts the deck or knocks.
The first six cards make the Talon. The Players are dealt 16 cards each in packets of eight. Except in Klop, the Declarer always plays alone against the other two Players.
Barach 70 play alone; no cards from the Talon; take no tricks; no bonuses. Klop cannot be Bid, but the other Bids are available to all players.
The bidding begins with the Player to dealer's right, and continues around the table anticlockwise.
If all three Players pass, Klop must be played. As in the four-player game, the Player who Bids first has seniority, and can then match the highest Bid when her turn comes around, etc.
The winner of the bidding can play the Bid or convert to a higher one. The Talon cards are then exchanged as appropriate, and there is an opportunity for announcements.
The cards are played as in the four-player game, and the hand is scored. In a contract of Three, Two or One, a player whose Mond is captured, or who leaves the Mond in the Talon, pays an individual penalty of 21 points.
A Player who has been dealt the Pagat but no other Tarocks has a special privilege. During the announcements, the Player can announce "Free Bird," and the Pagat is then exempt from the rules of following suit.
The Pagat can be played to any trick, and it wins the trick to which it is played, irrespective of what other cards are played to that trick.
The Round can be annulled during the bidding by any player who has no Tarocks, or one Tarock, or two Tarocks, both of which are below the X.
Tarok was certainly introduced to Romania from Austria in the 19th century, and the Romanian game preserves some older features of Austrian Tarok which have been abandoned elsewhere, especially the system of drawing the talon cards in stages.
Similar forms of Tarok are played in other parts of Romania, and in Chernovtsy formerly Czernowitz , which is now in Ukraine but was in Romania in the first part of the 20th century and was the capital of the Austrian province of Bukovina.
I am grateful to Teodor Totolici and Oleg Panchuk for information on these versions of the game. A standard card Austrian tarok pack is used.
The highest trump is the skiz , which is unnumbered and looks a little like a joker. The remaining trumps are identified by large Roman numbers: the second highest is the XXI , which is called luna moon , and the remaining trumps rank in numerical order, the lowest being the pagat I.
Each suit has four court cards: the king rege or popa , queen dama , horse kabal and jack valet below which are four pip cards: 10 - 7 in the black suits and ace - 4 in the red suits.
The rank of the suit cards from high to low is:. As in nearly all tarot games, one of the main aims is to win tricks containing valuable cards.
The cards have their normal point values as follows:. When counting up the cards won by each team at the end of the play, the cards are counted in groups of three, and two points subtracted from the total of each group.
When counting a pile of cards, if one or two cards are left over at the end, just one point is subtracted from their value. However the cards are divided between the teams, there are always 70 points in the pack altogether.
Further discussion of this method of counting can be found on the page about counting points in tarot games. The principal form of the game is for four players.
This will be described first, followed by the three-player form , which is played when a fourth person is not available.
The main description is of the game played at Suceava; the few variations we know of are mentioned at the end. The first dealer can be determined by taking from the pack four cards including one tarok, and dealing them to the players.
The one who receives the tarok deals first, and the turn to deal passes to the right after each hand.
Deal and play are anticlockwise. The players settle up in cash after each hand. The scores on which the payments are based will be called game points , to distinguish them from the card points that determine which team has won the game.
In , typical stakes varied from lei to 5, lei per game point at that time, one US dollar was equivalent to about 30, lei. There is a pool, to which all the players contribute, which is won by a successful announced pagat ultimo see below.
The traditional name for this pool is jidan , which is an insulting word for a Jew, but the players were embarrassed about this and did not like to use the term.
At the start of the game, and whenever the pool is empty, everyone contributes 1 game point to it.
In addition, at the start of each hand the dealer puts in 1 game point before dealing so the pool for the first hand contains 5 game points - 2 contributed by the dealer and 1 by each other player.
The dealer shuffles and offers the cards to the player opposite to cut. When the cards are cut at least 5 cards must remain in each portion of the pack.
When the cards have been cut the dealer puts the first 6 cards face down in the centre of the table to form the talon in a single batch, without disturbing their order and deals out the remaining cards in batches of 6 so that each player has 12 cards.
The player opposite the dealer can knock on the cards instead of cutting them, in which case the player to dealer's right has four options: to ask for the cards to be dealt 6 at a time as usual; or 12 at a time; or by a method called abeles ; or In all cases, the top six cards are dealt to the talon.
A player whose 12 cards include no tarok and no king may but is not obliged to demand that the hand be abandoned. In this case there is no bidding or play.
The cards are thrown in and the next dealer deals, after contributing one point to the pool as usual.
There are three possible contracts: doi , unu and solo , in which the declarer takes respectively two, one or no cards from the talon.
The contracts of doi and unu can be played at various levels, depending on the order in which the talon cards are inspected, on how much of the talon the declarer sees before taking cards and on which cards are taken.
Playing at a higher level increases the amount to be paid if the game is lost but usually does not affect the amount won if it is successful. Bidding always starts at the first level of the contract in question: the higher levels are used only when another player wants to overcall the first bidder.
In practice, by far the commonest contract is doi ; a player with a strong hand will usually play solo , and unu is rarely bid. The player to dealer's right speaks first; the possible bids are unul de doi first two , unul de unu first one or solo.
A player who does not wish to bid can pass, in which case the next player in turn has the same options. If all four players pass, a game of michi-michi is played.
If someone bids, the bidding continues in rotation for as many circuits as necessary until three players have passed. A player who has passed cannot bid again.
A later player can overcall a bid of unul de doi by bidding al doilea de doi second two , which in turn can be overcalled by al treilea de doi third two.
Any of these can be overcalled by unul de unu or solo. In the same way, unul de unu can in theory be overcalled by successively higher levels of one al doilea de unu , al treilea de unu or by solo.
A bid of solo cannot be overcalled by a later player. If a player whose first turn to bid was earlier has been overcalled by a later player, and wishes to stay in the bidding, the earlier player says 'la mine' to me , meaning that he or she is prepared to play the same contract that the overcaller named.
The earlier bidder takes priority and plays the contract unless the later bidder makes an overcall which the earlier bidder is unwilling to equal.
The remaining bidder when all the other players have passed is the declarer. The declarer must call a king, and whoever holds the called king is the declarer's partner for the hand.
The partner must not reveal his or her identity, but will become known during the play for example when the king is played , or in certain cases during the round of announcements.
It is legal to call a king that you hold yourself, and in that case you will play alone against the other three players in partnership; you also play alone if the called king happens to be in the talon.
These are the only methods of playing alone - if all the kings are in the hands of the other three players then you have to play with a partner. After calling a king, if the contract is doi , the declarer takes two cards from the talon and discards two; if it is unu the declarer takes one talon card and discards one, and if it is solo, the talon remains unseen until the end of the play.
The kings, skiz , luna and pagat cannot be discarded. Other trumps can be discarded only if the declarer has no other choice, and is thereby left with nothing but kings and trumps.
If any trumps are discarded they must be placed face up; other cards are discarded face down. By far the commonest contract is unul de doi , for which the procedure is as follows.
After calling a king, you look at the top two cards of the talon, keeping them separate from your hand. If you like these cards you can add them to your hand and discard two; the remaining four talon cards are placed face down to dealer's right; they will not be seen until the end of the play.
In this case you are playing at the first level. In jenen Gebieten, die früher zur Habsburgermonarchie gehört haben, wird heute mit einem reduzierten Blatt von 54, 42 oder 40 Karten gespielt.
